Why I Finally Did the Three-Beach Trip

For years I kept hearing that Digha is crowded Mandarmani is. Tajpur is “too quiet.”
Everyone had an opinion. Almost nobody had actually done all three in one go. So
I did. I packed a bag told my family I would be back in a few days and set off to
see for myself which of these three beaches deserved my money and which ones I could
skip next time.

What I found surprised me. These three places sit close to each other on the same
coastline that treating them as separate trips is honestly a waste of petrol and
time. Each has a different mood and together they make one of the easiest and most
affordable sea getaways in West Bengal. This guide is everything I learned on the
way including the mistakes, the bargaining and the small moments that stuck with
me.

Getting There. Why I Chose a Car

I started from Kolkata early in the morning. The train to Digha is a good option
and plenty of people take it but I wanted to hop between three beaches without waiting
for shared autos or negotiating at every stop. That is where renting a car made
sense.

I booked a hatchback with a driver through an operator a day before. A small car
like that is enough for two or three people with luggage and the driver knows the
coastal roads far better than any map app does. Rates change with season and fuel
prices so I will not pretend there is one fixed number,. For a multi-day coastal
route expect a daily rental plus a kilometre limit and always ask whether tolls,
parking and the driver’s night allowance are included. I did not ask that last part
the first time and ended up paying a bit extra. Lesson learned.

The drive itself is pleasant. You pass through Kolaghat Contai-side roads and long
stretches of green fields, with ponds and coconut trees. The highway is mostly smooth.
Once you turn towards the sea you can smell the salt before you see the water. From
Kolkata it took me four to five hours with a couple of breaks which is what most
drivers will tell you too.

Tajpur: The Quiet One I Did Not Expect to Love

I chose to go to Tajpur because Tajpur is the least developed of the three and I
wanted a beginning. When we reached Tajpur I even wondered if my driver had taken
a turn. Tajpur had no people, casuarina trees, a wide beach and the waves making
their own noise.

The beach at Tajpur is cleaner than Digha and less busy than Mandarmani. Near the
shore I saw a tea stall owned by a man who poured tea into a clay cup. I stayed
there for two minutes simply holding the cup and watching tiny red crabs dive into
their holes whenever I moved. It may sound silly. Those two minutes made the trip
feel like a holiday of a tight schedule.

Later I walked to the watchtower area. Spent most of the afternoon simply sitting
on the sand. Tajpur does not offer nightlife or shopping. If you look for entertainment
every hour you will feel bored. If you crave silence and a view of the sea Tajpur
is hard to surpass.

Budget Hotels in Tajpur

Hotels in Tajpur are mainly resorts and guesthouses and the budget options are quite
reasonable compared with Mandarmani. I stayed in a room with a fan, a bed, a clean
bathroom and a balcony that looked toward the trees. The room was not fancy. The
Wi-Fi was unreliable. The staff were friendly and the food was home-style fish curry
and rice that I still remember.

My advice is to book on weekends and during festival periods because good budget
rooms are limited. On weekdays you can usually walk in. Negotiate. Ask to see the
room test the water pressure and always confirm if breakfast is included. Some places
add it quietly others bill it separately.

Mandarmani: Long Beach, Higher Prices

The day we drove to Mandarmani, which’s only a short ride away. The first thing
that struck me was how long the beach is. Mandarmani is famous for its beach. On
many stretches cars and bikes are allowed to drive on the sand a rare sight, in
eastern India. Rules can change, so check locally before you plan. When I went I
saw cars and bikes moving along the shoreline. It felt oddly thrilling.

Mandarmani is more developed than Tajpur. You will notice resorts, themed hotels
and weekend crowds from Kolkata. This also means prices rise, on Fridays and Saturdays.
I saw that rooms near the beach front cost clearly more than those a few lanes inside.
If your budget is tight pick a hotel a little away from the sea. A five‑minute walk
or a short auto ride can save an amount and you still get the same beach.

Budget Hotels in Mandarmani

I looked at three or four places before deciding. The cheaper ones are usually clean
but basic with parking and small rooms. The mid‑range ones add a restaurant and
sometimes a small garden. I learned that online photos of Mandarmani can be generous
with angles so call the hotel and ask a question: how far is the beach on foot?
The honest ones will answer directly.

I also discovered that food at hotel restaurants is more expensive than at local
eateries nearby. One evening I left the hotel. Ate at a tiny place near the road,
where the fried fish and rice cost far less than what my hotel charged and tasted
just as good.

Digha: Busy, Loud and Still Worth Visiting

Digha is the oldest and most famous of the three. It shows. Old Digha and New Digha
feel quite different. Old Digha has the market the busy promenade and many lodges.
New Digha is a bit more organised with hotels and a calmer beach.

The sea at Digha is shallow and safe for wading which is why families love it. I
walked along the promenade in the evening ate a plate of snacks from a cart and
watched the crowd. It is noisy yes. It has energy that the other two beaches do
not. I also visited the aquarium and the science centre out of curiosity and found
them decent for children.

Budget Hotels, in Digha

Digha offers the selection of inexpensive rooms along West Bengal’s coast. That
is good and bad. It is good because you always find a place. It is bad because quality
differs a lot. I checked lodges in Old Digha and some were really not good with
damp smell and bad lighting. New Digha was value for me with cleaner rooms for a
little more money.

A tip that worked for me is to avoid arriving after dark without a booking. Touts
at the bus stand and taxi stand will take you to places that pay them commission.
Book one night in advance by phone and then look around the next day if you want
something better.

How the Three Beaches Connect by Road

Tajpur, Mandarmani and Digha are on the coast in Purba Medinipur. The distances
are small. Tajpur and Mandarmani are a short drive apart. Digha is a bit farther
half an hour to forty‑five minutes from Tajpur depending on traffic. This is why
a rented car works well. You can leave one hotel after breakfast reach the beach
before lunch and still have the whole afternoon to yourself.

If you travel by transport instead you will rely on buses and shared vehicles. The
connections between Tajpur and Mandarmani are less frequent than you think. I met
a couple on the beach who tried this and lost half a day waiting. They looked very
tired when I spoke with them.

Car Rental Tips From My Own Trip

Always confirm the cost before you leave. Ask if the quote includes the driver’s
food and stay, tolls, state tax and parking. Ask about the kilometre limit. What
happens if you go over. Keep the driver’s number. Share your plan clearly because
a driver who knows you want to see sunrise at the beach will adjust the schedule
happily.

I would also suggest avoiding late‑night driving on the return. Some stretches are
dark. Have trucks. Tired drivers are not worth the risk. We left Digha in the morning
and reached Kolkata by evening without any stress.

Time to Visit

I went outside peak season and I am glad I did. Winter, from November to February
is the most comfortable.. It is also when hotel prices and crowds rise. Monsoon
brings skies and rough seas and some beaches become unsafe for swimming. Summer
is hot and humid. Budget rooms are easiest to find then.

My personal pick is the shoulder period after the monsoon or early in spring. The
weather is decent. You are not fighting for a table at lunch.

What I Would Do Differently

If I did this trip again I would spend two nights in Tajpur, one in Mandarmani and
one in Digha. I gave Mandarmani time than it needed and Tajpur less than it deserved.
I would also carry a power bank because electricity can be patchy, in places. I
would bring cash because not every small shop takes payments.

I would eat more at eateries and less at hotel restaurants. I would talk to the
drivers and tea sellers more. Honestly most of my tips came from random conversations,
not from websites.

Final Thoughts

Digha and Mandarmani and Tajpur are three different faces of the same coastline.
Tajpur gave me peace Mandarmani gave me space and spectacle and Digha gave me noise,
food and nostalgia. Together they make a trip that’s easy on the wallet and easy
to plan especially if you rent a car and keep your hotel choices sensible. I came
back tired a bit sunburnt and very happy which is how a short beach trip should
end.

If you are planning your route check the latest hotel rates and beach rules before
you go since things change quickly on this coast.. If you pass a little tea stall
near the sand stop for two minutes. It costs nothing and you will remember it longer,
than the hotel.
