Digha vs. Mandarmani: Which Sea Beach Fits Your Weekend Vibe?

By Gyanesh

Weekend beach trip from Kolkata and two names keep coming up: Digha and Mandarmani. Both are in Purba Medinipur both are reachable in 4 to 5 hours by road and both give you the Bay of Bengal without a long journey.. They offer very different weekends. Here is how I’d break it down.

Getting there

Both are easy from Kolkata. Digha is slightly farther by road while Mandarmani is a bit closer and the drive is usually smoother. Digha also has a train connection to Digha station, which is handy if you don’t want to drive. Mandarmani has no rail station of its own so most people go by car or bus or take a train to Contai and a local vehicle from there.

The vibe

Digha is the busy beach town. Think crowds, hawkers, shops, seafood stalls and a lively promenade. It’s a favourite for Bengali families and theres always something going on. In peak season. On long weekends it gets packed.

Mandarmani is quieter and more laid back. Its resorts sit along a wide stretch of shore and the pace is slower. It’s better if you want to switch off sit by the water and not deal with crowds.

The beach itself

Mandarmani is known for one of the drivable beaches in India. Low tide exposes a flat stretch where cars and bikes can run on the sand, which is a fun experience for first-timers. Dighas beach is more of a walking beach with the sea closer to the shore line and more activity around it.

Swimming needs care at both. Tides and currents can be strong so stay in the designated areas and follow local advice.

Things to do

Digha highlights:

  • Evening walk along the sea-facing promenade
  • fish and seafood at local stalls
  • Udaipur beach and the Digha Science Centre
  • Day trips to Chandaneswar temple and Tajpur

Mandarmani highlights:

  • Driving or biking on the beach at low tide
  • Watching red crabs scuttle across the sand
  • Quiet sunrise and sunset sessions
  • Resort time with pools and relaxed meals

Digha has more variety within walking distance. Mandarmani is about slowing down.

Which one is cheaper?

Prices vary by season and booking channel so treat these as guides and check current rates.

Stay: Digha has a bigger range from basic lodges to mid-range hotels so it’s easier to find something cheap. Mandarmani is resort-heavy so rooms usually cost more on weekends and holidays.

Food: Dighas local eateries and stalls are affordable and plentiful. In Mandarmani resort meals can add up though there are places too.

Overall: For a budget weekend Digha usually works out cheaper. Mandarmani costs more. Gives you more space and peace, for the money.

A few practical tips

Avoid peak weekends if you can. Long weekends and festival periods mean crowds and higher prices, at both places.

Check tide timings. Beach driving and swimming depend on it.

Book ahead. Good resorts and hotels fill fast on weekends.

Carry sun protection. The sun is stronger than it feels with the sea breeze.

Winter is the spot. Pleasant weather makes both places more enjoyable while the monsoon brings rough seas.

So which should you pick?

Choose Digha if you want an atmosphere, easy train access, lots of food options and a lower budget.

Choose Mandarmani if you want a relaxed weekend a unique beach-driving experience and a resort stay.

Can’t decide? Pick Digha for a fun, budget-friendly family or friends outing and Mandarmani for a couple’s or small-group getaway.

Final thoughts

Neither is a choice. Digha is the wallet-friendly option and Mandarmani is the calm spacious one. Match the beach to your mood. You’ll have a good weekend either way.
