Meghalaya Sightseeing Cabs from Guwahati: What Should a Fair Daily Package Cost?
\By Gyanesh
Booking a cab to Meghalaya from Guwahati is where first‑timers often pay much. Quotes can vary by thousands of rupees for the route and no one explains why. This guide tells you what a fair daily rate should be, what it should contain and which extra charges to keep an eye on.
Start with the route and distance
Most trips to Meghalaya start in Guwahati and go to Shillong first. It is 100 km and takes 3 to 4 hours on NH‑6. From Shillong the common loop goes to Cherrapunjee (Sohra) Mawlynnong and Dawki. Each part looks short on the map. Takes long on the road so quotes are based on days, not kilometres.
What a fair daily rate looks like
Rates change with the vehicle, season and operator so think of these figures as estimates, not set prices. Online rate cards show a range. One Shillong operator lists rates from about ₹2,700 to ₹9,000 depending on the vehicle. A usual benchmark for a small car is a Meghalaya‑registered hired cab for couples, families or groups of 3 to 4 quoted at about ₹3,500 to ₹4,500 per day. These are figures that you should check locally. The same source recommends adding a 10 to 20 percent cushion to rates.
Based on that here is my rough range for 2026. These are my estimates, not rates:
Small sedan or hatchback (up to 3 to 4 people): about ₹3,500 to ₹5,000 per day
Ertiga or similar 6‑seater: about ₹4,500 to ₹6,500 per day
Innova or other SUV: about ₹5,500 to ₹8,000 per day
Tempo traveller (group): quoted case by case and much higher
If a quote for a small car is far below the lower end ask what is missing. If it is above the upper end in a normal season you are probably paying a tourist markup.
What a fair package should include
A daily rate means little until you know what it covers. Before you agree ask:
Kilometre limit. Is it unlimited or capped per day? Hill routes add up fast.
Driver. Night halt. Many quotes add this on top for multi‑day trips.
Tolls, parking and entry fees. These are usually extra. Confirm them in writing.
Drop. Is the Guwahati to Shillong transfer. Priced as a separate day?
Taxes. Fuel is normally included,. Check about GST.
Waiting time. Treks like Nongriat leave the car parked for hours. Ask if waiting is free.
Shared cab vs. Private cab
If you are only going from Guwahati to Shillong and not hiring a car for sightseeing shared is much cheaper. Shared cabs from Paltan Bazar in Guwahati cost about ₹300 to ₹400 per seat. Once you reach Shillong you can hire a cab for sightseeing days only. Solo travellers can also look at buses. Shared Sumos and Meghalaya Transport Corporation buses start from, about Rs 210.
For two or more people a private cab usually works out better because you control the stops the start time and the pace.
Should your cab be Meghalaya-registered?
You will often hear that Guwahati cabs cannot do sightseeing in Shillong. One travel guide says this is an association demand, not a government rule. Still it recommends using a Meghalaya-registered cab for sightseeing days. In practice it helps avoid conflicts at check points. Always ask your operator how they handle this because some will switch you to a car in Shillong and that could change the price.
How a package compares with booking
Ready-made tour packages include stays, meals and transport. Some group road-trip packages from Guwahati start at around ₹21,499 per person for 6 days. That is a product from a cab-only booking. So don’t compare them directly. If you book the cab, a 5-day small-car trip at ₹4,000 per day will cost about ₹20,000 for the car. A group of four can share that.. Add hotels, food and entry fees on top.
A few practical tips
Get quotes from 2 to 3 operators. Compare what is included not the total number.
Get the quote on WhatsApp or in writing. It protects you from extra charges later.
Don’t pay the amount in advance. A small booking deposit is fine. Pay the rest at the end.
Avoid last-minute bookings during peak season. Prices go up on weekends, holidays and between October and March. That’s when the weather is best.
Keep an eye on permit rules. As of October 2026 no Inner Line Permit is needed for visitors.. Rules change. Check before you travel.
Plan fewer stops each day. Hill roads are slow. Many stops make the day rushed. Drivers may ask for overtime pay.
So what’s a fair price?
For a car in normal season a fair all-in daily price from Guwahati is between ₹3,500 and ₹5,000. That includes fuel, driver allowance and a reasonable kilometre limit. For vehicles adjust accordingly. If a price seems low check the inclusions. If its high ask for a breakdown. Compare it with two other quotes.
Final thoughts
You don’t need to haggle in Meghalaya. You need to ask the questions. A clear quote, a written list of inclusions and a driver who knows the roads are worth more, than saving a hundred rupees.
