Shillong and Cherrapunji 4-Day Itinerary: Budget Breakdown for Couples

By Gyanesh

Shillong and Cherrapunji also known as Sohra are among the most rewarding first trips to Meghalaya for couples. Roads are good distances are short and four days let you see the sights without rushing. The tricky part is the budget because online quotes vary from cheap to very high. Below is a day‑by‑day plan and a cost breakdown that you can adjust to your own style.

Quick facts before you plan

Guwahati to Shillong is 100 km and takes 3 to 4 hours via NH‑6. From Shillong to Cherrapunji it is 54 km. It looks short on a map but hill roads are slow so keep plans modest. October to March is usually the pleasant time. Summers and the monsoon bring rain, landslides and cloud cover that can hide the views.

The 4‑day plan

Day 1: Guwahati to Shillong

Leave Guwahati late in the morning.

Stop at Umiam Lake to enjoy the views.

Check in at your Shillong hotel.

In the evening visit Police Bazar for street food and light shopping.

Keep the day relaxed after the drive.

Day 2: Shillong sightseeing, Cherrapunji

Start at Elephant Falls and Shillong Peak.

If time allows, visit Ward’s Lake.

After lunch drive to Cherrapunji. Settle in.

Staying in Cherrapunji for one night gives you quiet mornings and fewer day‑tripper crowds.

Day 3: Cherrapunji day

Nohkalikai Falls, Mawsmai Cave and Seven Sisters Falls are the standard stops.

Go early because clouds often roll in by midday.

If you are fit and want adventure the Nongriat double‑decker living root bridge trek is the headline experience.

It involves a descent and climb so it takes most of the day.

Return to Shillong in the evening. Stay another night in Cherrapunji.

Day 4: Laitlum Canyon. Return to Guwahati

Stop at Laitlum Canyon for sunrise or morning views on the way back.

Then drive to Guwahati for your flight or train.

Book onward travel for the evening not the afternoon because delays are common.

Mawlynnong and Dawki are add‑ons but they stretch a 4‑day trip. Some packages cram them in which makes driving days. If you want those add a day.

Budget breakdown for a couple

Prices change with season and booking channel so treat these as figures. Check rates before you book. The numbers below are my estimates, built from the sources I found.

A few notes on how I got these numbers:

Cab: A Meghalaya‑registered cab for couples and small groups quotes around ₹3,500 to ₹4,500 per day for a car. These figures are older. Should be verified locally. I used that as the base for four days. If you only need transport from Guwahati to Shillong and plan to hire afterwards shared cabs from Paltan Bazar cost about ₹300 to ₹400, per seat.

Hotels: An traveller’s log shows that a night at a Shillong hotel costs about ₹2,500. In Cherrapunji prices vary more and a view‑facing room or a homestay that includes meals can cost more.

Reality check: The same log lists a total of ₹26,000 for a three‑day trip. About ₹9,000 was spent on a taxi, including toll and parking and ₹2,000 on entry tickets and boating. That trip was older and undated so today’s costs may be higher. It shows that a low‑budget estimate is realistic.

Packages vs. Booking yourself

Ready‑made packages can be useful if you do not want to plan. One operator lists a 3‑night, 4‑day Shillong and Cherrapunji tour from ₹16,999 per person including 3‑star hotels and surface transfers. That price fits within my range. It is a solid option. Read the exclusions carefully. Packages often omit entry fees, camera fees and personal expenses and the price may change with travel dates, hotel availability and seasonal demand.

If you book yourself you save the operators margin. Control the pace of the trip. If you book a package you save the effort of planning. Neither choice is wrong.

A few practical tips

Book Cherrapunji stays early. There are good hotels in Cherrapunji than in Shillong.

Start early each day. Mornings are clearer. You avoid the afternoon mist.

Carry cash. ATMs and card machines can be unreliable outside Shillong.

Pack light. A rain jacket. Weather can change within an hour.

Confirm cab inclusions. Ask about the kilometre limit, driver allowance and tolls before you agree.

Check cancellation terms. Some packages charge close to departure so read the policy before paying.

Skip the Nongriat trek if the weather is bad. The steps get slippery in rain.

So how much should you spend?

For a not extravagant couple’s trip expect roughly ₹30,000 to ₹40,000 in total. You can go lower with shared transport and budget stays or higher with hotels and private touches. The big swing factors are the cab and the hotel so those two items are worth comparing

Final thoughts

Four days is enough to see the best of Shillong and Cherrapunji without feeling rushed long as you resist the urge to add more stops. Pick one or two highlights each day leave room for tea and views and the trip works out better, than any itinerary.
